Social times

The social side of banking life has rarely been overlooked. First introduced in 1959, the Staff News was a monthly newsletter distributed across the bank.

Staff stayed informed with general banking news, updates on staffing and social activities. Photos were a great source of entertainment. Today, they offer valuable insight into the changes in workplace culture over the decades.

A 1950s Annual Report noted almost 60% of staff were aged under 25 years. The youth culture was reflected in regular reports of engagements, marriages, social and sporting events. Tales of banking blunders, poems and short stories were also prominent.

Earlier generations of bank staff were not forgotten. News From The Pensioners and an annual list of postal addresses published prior to Christmas helped to maintain friendships.
