Evelyn Page

After attending Canterbury College School of Art, 1915-22, Evelyn Page studied music before embarking on her long, ardently independent career as a painter. The 1960s, when Girl at Coffee Bar was painted, are considered an ‘amazingly rich decade’ in Page’s career. Here she places a conventional portrait-subject in the midst of a chaos of objects, people and architecture. Janet Paul has written: ‘Always, Evelyn Page’s range of subject matter reflects the human presence and a full busy richness of life.’
